How to build an SMS opt-in list that converts

A small, consented, high-intent list beats a big bought one every time. Here is where the opt-ins come from and what to expect.

By Mara Voss, Lifecycle & SMS Strategy Lead · Updated 9 June 2026

The value of an SMS list is not its size, it is its intent. A list of 4,000 people who actively typed their number in will out-earn 40,000 scraped contacts every send, and it will not torch your opt-out rate or your deliverability. This guide covers the four reliable opt-in sources, what a compliant sign-up looks like, and the acquisition rates to aim for so you know whether your setup is working.

Where do SMS opt-ins actually come from?

Four sources do most of the work for ecommerce brands. Each one captures intent at a different moment, and together they keep growth steady rather than spiky.

  • On-site popup:the workhorse. A two-step popup that asks for the phone number with a first-order incentive.
  • Checkout opt-in:an unbundled tick at the point of sale, where intent is highest.
  • Keyword opt-in:"text JOIN to…", useful in-store, on packaging, and in email.
  • Email cross-promotion:invite engaged email subscribers to add SMS, with a fresh active opt-in.

What acquisition rate should you expect?

Postscript's 2026 benchmarks, drawn from more than 17,000 Shopify stores, put the visitor-to-subscriber rate between 0.45% at the 25th percentile and 5.22% at the 90th. Cost per subscriber sits around $0.45. Use those as your scoreboard.

Visitor-to-subscriber rateWhere you stand
Under 1%Offer or placement needs work
2–3%Healthy for a focused store
5%+Top decile — strong incentive and timing

What does a compliant opt-in look like?

Every source above has to clear the same bar. GDPR Article 4(11) requires a clear affirmative action, so the box is never pre-ticked and the SMS consent is never bundled with something else. State who you are and what they will receive, keep a record of the opt-in, and include an easy STOP from the first message. We cover the legal detail in the GDPR and SMS consent guide.

Make the list earn its keep

A clean list pays off in the numbers that matter: Omnisend records SMS campaign click rates around 12.39%, far above email, but only against subscribers who chose to be there. The moment you pad the list with low-intent contacts, opt-outs climb and delivery suffers. Grow it deliberately, then put it to work with automation flows and a real campaign calendar.

FAQ

List-building FAQ

What is a good SMS list acquisition rate?+
Postscript’s 2026 benchmarks put visitor-to-subscriber rates between 0.45% at the 25th percentile and 5.22% at the 90th. A well-built popup on a focused store should clear 2–3%. Below 1% usually means the offer or the placement needs work, not more traffic.
Should I use a discount to get opt-ins?+
A first-order incentive lifts sign-up rate, and at roughly $0.45 cost per subscriber the maths usually works. Keep the value high enough to be worth a phone number but not so high it trains buyers to wait. Pair it with relevance so the list is worth more than the discount cost.
Can I add my email subscribers to SMS automatically?+
No. An email opt-in is not an SMS opt-in. Consent under GDPR Article 4(11) is specific to a purpose and channel, so you need a fresh, active SMS opt-in. You can invite email subscribers to join SMS, but they must take the action themselves.
How fast should the list grow?+
Steadily beats spiky. A popup converting 2–3% of traffic plus checkout and keyword opt-ins compounds quietly. Sudden jumps from a contest or a bought list tend to bring low-intent numbers that lift opt-out rates and drag delivery.
